6-day Itinerary for Iceland (with full map)

Previously, I have posted many posts about our previous Iceland trip that we have organized in August, 2018. Even though I have shared all the highlights and experiences in many different posts, I wanted to share also our itinerary and our google maps - which helped us navigate big time!

DAY 0

We arrived to Reykjavik airport the night before and spent the night in the Guesthouse Alex by Keflavik Airport. They provide an airport shuttle in both directions and breakfast service. What we didn't expect is to stay in little wooden houses, which was an amazing experience!

DAY 1

In the morning, we woke up to this view! Partially sunny and heavily rainy. But watching the cutest wooden houses around the calmest neighborhood ever was the perfect way of hearing "Welcome to Iceland!!"

After a quick breakfast, we headed to the airport using the shuttle and find the staff of 4x4 car rentals to reach our car. After a quick documentation procedure, we took our car and headed to Blue Lagoon!

Even if there is a huge debate about to go or not to go to the Blue Lagoon, we wanted to try this "one of a lifetime" experience and let me tell you - we would go again if we decide to visit Iceland again! We went there super early in the morning and maybe that's why it was not as crowded as people complain online. Obviously, the entrance is a bit expensive, especially if you consider the possible free options in the country, but the overall experience was so amazing that I am not even sorry for doing it.

After spending approximately 4 hours in the lagoon, we decided to hit the road to .

Seljalandsfoss is our first destination. It is one of the most popular waterfalls, especially since you can walk behind it, which gives an amazing experience! Even if the weather isn't rainy, you will get completely wet because of the waterfall - be prepared! The official car park is right next to the waterfall with 700 ISK fee, but you can also park for free about 300 - 400m before, right at the corner of the main road.

Soon, we reached Skogafoss. This is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland. If you have seen the TV Show Vikings, this is where Floki finds himself and decides to settle a new civilization. The waterfall is actually and really that impressive!

PS: according to the legend, there is a treasure behind it. If you are brave enough, go check it out 😁

Next stop is Dyrholaey Lighthouse. In order to reach here, you might need to drive a road only suitable for 4x4 for about 10 minutes. This lighthouse cliff is pretty popular since it provides one of the best views for the Dytholaey cliff. You can also watch the endless coastline with black sand beach from the top and observe puffin life. OK, I actually have no proof of the puffins, I am not ashamed to say that I enjoyed my time observing than trying to capture the moment. For more detailed photos of puffins, please check out here

We finish our day visiting the famous Reynisdrangar. This is where amazing rock formations occurred near the shore. The formations are the remains from large sea cliffs and serve as a vital part of this zone's allure. Even if the whole area around the city of Vik and Mt. Reynisfjall, the most touristic part is the beach around these stiff rock formations. Approach the ocean by caution - some waves can rise out of nowhere and chase far up the sand then someone would expect. In fact, our friend was trying to touch the ocean with the fingers and found herself completely wet below the waist. From other's experiences, we learned that she got lucky, since there are also many tourists died - just like that.

Well, still our friend was super lucky because this beach was the end of our journey and our hotel for the night Guesthouse Reynir was just 10 minutes away from the beach by car. We have done some shopping during the day from a BONUS supermarket, so we just used the kitchen space and prepared some dinner and went to sleep.

DAY 2

In our second day, this is what we woke up to. Even though the mountains are covered with a little bit fog, soon we realized that we are getting really lucky for the day! The fog disappeared and we were left with clear sunny sky.

Our first stop is Foss a Sidu after 1 hour of drive. The waterfall is just on the road so you cannot really miss. The road coming closer to the waterfall was physically blocked, so we parked our cars and just took some shots from a distance. Again, there is no parking fee and there is a possibility that you have to wait for some of the other cars to go away before to park. Just a 15 minutes of wandering would be sufficient for this zone.

Today's main attractions are determined to be ice lagoons. First, we decided to visit the Fjallsarlon ice lagoon, which is at the south end of the glacier Vatnajokull. The ice lagoon is full of floating icebergs that fall from the edge of the glacier itself. In fact, you can also collect some ice from the ground on the beach. Honestly, Fjallsarlon is not the most popular of the most impressive ice lake, but it is easily reachable and there are much less people around so you can make better photos and spend better time.

Lunch time. We are in a good mood thanks to the amazing view and perfect sunny weather, so we decided to have our sandwiches on the Diamond beach. This is just another black sand beach where one of the iceberg lakes reach the ocean. As the ice floats over the ocean and breaks into pieces, some of them hit the shore and cause the beach shine like - well, a diamond!

Ice pieces hitting the road can be really small, or really big. Nevertheless, if you visit the beach on a warm and sunny day like us, the temperature change would cause the beach to be foggy, which is a unique and an amazing experience.  There are tons of ways to enjoy the beach, find yours!

After the lunch break, we hit the Jokulsarlon ice lagoon, which is situated at the beginning of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacierThis is one of the most popular and touristic spots in the south Iceland. We have not visited so many glaciers, but observing the spectacular icebergs floating around this huge lake makes it clear why.

I assume that non of you consider going in for a dive or a hiking on the icebergs, but these danger signs make me think that there are actually people considering! Anyways, what you can do is to take a boat tour in the lake! In fact, the second we arrive to the lake, we booked our tour. With big boats, half an hour of ride costs about 40€. Fortunately, we had to wait only for an hour - an amazing time to chill out and enjoy a cold beer. Oh yeah, we used the lake to cool it down..

On the boat, they talk about the development of this lake, the glacier formation, you get to taste a piece of ice and you might get to observe some seals. We were not lucky with the seals, but we had an amazing time!

For the night, the guesthouse we arranged was on the east and we decided to visit one of the eastern fjords before finishing the day. Our Lonely Travel book suggested that if we had to choose a town in the East fjords, this had to be Seydisfjordur. We took their advice and realized that they were completely right! Seydisfjordur is the cutest and historical town in the East Iceland, surrounded by snow covered green mountains and super tall waterfalls. The town has colorful wooden houses, many murals, bar, restaurants and the a charming church. We also saw some international cruise ships that bring some daily tourists to the town frequently from Norway.

After walking around a little bit in this cutest Eastern town, we drove up to our room for the night in Guesthouse Asgardur. This was a completely out of nowhere guesthouse and we were lucky to have the whole house for ourselves.

DAY 3

For our third day, we woke up to this. Cool, right? Completely out of nowhere - what you feel the most while traveling Iceland. After a quick breakfast, we start driving back to the middle south, to reach the Skaftafell National Park.

Skaftafell is somehow one of the biggest and the most touristic national park in Iceland, which includes a little bit of everything. If you are a camper, this is an amazing place to park. Other than that, you can simply take a little walk to visit just another iceberg lagoon Svinafellsjokull.

The impressing thing here was that the ice lagoon is completely hidden behind the green mountains. In fact, reaching the ice lagoon requires about 15 minutes of walk and you can feel the temperature change in every minute of the walk.

Next, we took just another hiking trail to reach the Svartifoss waterfall. This is just another "easy" trail, but let me warn you that the pain during the incline is real! Nevertheless, it is worth it.

This is just another day we thought that we got lucky and this is why we decided to stop at the DC3 Plane Crash Site on the way to our next Guesthouse. This is where an American military plane got a crash in the 70s and the plane is still laying around there for the touristic reason.

You need to park the car and walk to reach the plane for about 3,5 km. Previously, I said that we "thought" we were lucky but the more we walked in the open black sand desert the more real the wind got. Nevertheless, after a 40 minutes of almost flying, we reached the crash with no accident (yeyy!).

Our final destination is Godaland Guesthouse - where we have 2 nights of stay. The location seems amazing as much as the utilities. It's a happy stay.

DAY 4

We devoted this day completely for the Golden Circle, which I've already detailed all of our stops in my previous post.

Drive Yourself in Iceland: Golden Circle

After completing our trip, we are back to the Godaland Guesthouse - it feels really nice to stay in the same hotel after a week of preparing our luggages every day!

DAY 5

We devoted this day completely for the Snaefellsnes peninsula, which I have already detailed all our stops in my previous post.

Drive Yourself in Iceland: Snaefellsnes

Pretty soon, we head to Reykjavik to find our accommodation for the night that we arranged from airbnb. Up to now, we spent all of our dinners in the guesthouses cooking simple for us - salad, soups, salmon or pasta. There are two reasons for this: first, we were mostly staying completely out of nowhere and second, being out of nowhere make the restaurant prices completely go high. Coming closer to the city helped us consider having a dinner out, so we headed to IKEA to try some lamb stew and more beer.

DAY 6 : Reykjavik

Before heading to the airport for our midnight flights, we have a day to explore Reykjavik. Please check my highlights from my previous post.

Enjoy!
