Frankfurt Highlights

1. Romerberg: The most German part and the most touristic place in Frankfurt is the Romer square. The name of the square comes from the iconic city hall building with traditional architecture. The view gets only better with high buildings in the skyline. Even though the name of this square comes from the city hall in the photo above, it gets only better with the other buildings covering the square. They are some restaurants and beer gardens, which represent exactly what I had in mind when I think about Germany. Behind these buildings, you can reach the Frankfurt cathedral and a Dom museum to visit the observatory and the tower.

The square is so nice and cute, having a visit only during the day should not be enough. If you have the time, you must have a walk around it also during the night.

2. Bridges: Frankfurt am Main is located around the Main river, as the name says more than enough. As I always write on my posts, where there is river, there are cute bridges to cross! So the most iconic one is the Eiserner steg which is the closest one to the Romerburg.

You should definitely cross the bridge. The view gets pretty cute with a steel bridge structure and skyscrapers in the background.

After having a walk around the river through the street, where you can find many many museums on the way. You can cross back from Friedensbrucke, which is next to Westhafen tower, which has an iconic modern architecture as well.

3. Parks: As German people love the green and park areas all around their towns, Frankfurt also has a lot of park spots that you can enjoy. In fact, having a walk around the riverside along Untermainkai is quiet nice to relax and get some fresh air. We got there in January, so all we got was the dry trees, but I am pretty sure it would get only better in spring or autumn.

As we are really fond of Asian culture and temples, in every city we go we try to check out the oriental gems in the city. For Frankfurt, we found a Chinese garden hidden in the Bethmann park. To be honest, also the park itself seems really peaceful, but the freezing German weather kinda prevented us to enjoy it. We got even more unlucky because by the time we got to the Chinese garden, it was closed already. So keep in mind that the parks and gardens have opening hours too!

4. Modern Frankfurt: It would be really unfair if we mention only the traditional German part of town and skip the modern part. In fact, Frankfurt is one of the biggest banking centers in Europe, which explains all the tall buildings and the modern architecture that is well adapted to the city.

Head to the Zeil street to get to the shopping district of town and find the biggest world brands here if you are interested to shop. Even if you are not interested, the modern architecture of the shopping center MyZeil is worth a glance on your way.

5. Food: The best food we had in Frankfurt was - yes you guessed it right! - the saussages! This time, we wanted to go a bit cheaper and get a hot dog on the way in Romerberg. I was afraid of having high prices for a simple lunch since it is a touristic place, but Alten Limpurg is the best place for a quick lunch.

Alternatively, you can head to Taunus street or Berger street to find something else. You can grab something quick from supermarkets on the way like a fresh sandwich. If you are interested with merging the German culture with an Austrian one, I can suggest you a local bar for it. Zum Alten Frankfurter is owned by a lady, who is from Austria as we assume, and make really good and cheap schnitzels. Perfect to feel the local spirit instead of touristic one.

Enjoy!
