We bought our return tickets for Tokyo, so no matter what we were obliged to pass from Tokyo. As long as we had an accommodation in Tokyo, we decided that we could arrange some daily trips using our beloved JR Pass. I'll come back to the details soon.
Most of the travel blogs around the internet kept emphasizing the importance and the beauty of Kyoto. So we thought what is Japan REALLY without Kyoto, all those temples and geishas. So, we chose our second accommodation in Kyoto.
So, let me detail some more what we did :
DAY 1: We reached Tokyo in the morning and we barely had the time to reach the hotel and then to Shinjuku train station to activate our JR Pass and make some reservations for the following trains. In the evening, we just enjoyed the Tokyo tower and an amazing sushi!
DAY 2: It was a Tokyo day, so we visited Senso-ji Temple, Akihabara district, Shibuya, Yoyogi park, Meiji Jingu shrine and Takashaki street. We finished the evening with a simple ramen around Akasaka, near our hotel.
DAY 3: We woke up super early in the morning and got a train to visit Nikko. In the afternoon we were planning to see the Rainbow bridge and see around the seaside, but the heavy rain told us "well, think again!" So we had to go back to the hotel and rest for a while. We enjoyed the possibly best sushi ever and visited Hard Rock Cafe to complete our travel routine.
DAY 4: Another day in Tokyo. We visited the Imperial palace in the morning, had lunch in the fish market and did some shopping in Shibuya. We enjoyed Shinjuku streets during the evening.
DAY 5: Morning trip to Fuji-Q entertainment park so Fabio could get a couple of rides in a roller coster. We spent the afternoon around the Lake Kawaguchi to enjoy the view of Mt. Fuji.
DAY 6: It's the day for Kyoto! The highlights from the day were the philosopher's path, Higashiyama Jisho-ji temple, Yasaka shrine and Gion.
DAY 7: Morning trip to Hiroshima to see the Dome and the peace museum. We were back to Kyoto around 2, so we had enough time to see Fushimi Inari Taisha Sanshuden. We spent the afternoon in the narrow streets around Hashinocho district.
DAY 8: Our last day in Kyoto, so we visited the bamboo forest, Kinkakuji temple, Niko castle and Koyomizu-dera Shrine. We took the train and went back to Tokyo.
I am planning to keep writing these places and some insights about both Tokyo and Kyoto.
If we had more days, these are things I would have added to our schedule:
- 1 day in Osaka
- half a day in Miyajima to combine with Hiroshima
- more shopping in Shibuya!
- 1 day in Nara
